Aiseyman! Murtads should not let Muslims dictate how others view them!

Murtad

Okay… For the first day of ?#?murtadappreciationweek?… I’m gonna talk about the term “Murtad”… and its unique application in Malaysia… and to some extent, Singapore...

As some of you might know... Murtad is Arabic for an apostate... In Islam, a murtad is a Muslim who has consciously abandoned Islam in word or through deed. It includes the act of converting to another religion, or becoming non-religious, by a person who was born in a Muslim family or who had previously accepted Islam...

However, like evolution (haha, pun intended).... the term has also evolved to include and applied onto Muslims who have questioned or denied any "fundamental tenet or creed" of Islam such as the divinity of Allah, prophethood of Muhammad, or who have mocked Allah, worshipped one or more idols, reject Sharia courts, or knowingly believed in an interpretation of Sharia that is contrary to the consensus of the Islamic community.

Now in Malaysia, according to the constitution... A Malay is legally defined (can you imagine defining a race?) as someone who speaks the Malay language habitually, practices customs and traditions associated with Malay culture and adopts Islam as his/her religion (notice I said "and" instead of "or").

So when a Malay Muslim decides to abandon Islam, technically that person is no longer a Malay and forfeits all rights and benefits provided for being a Malay... because it pays to be of a certain race according to some genius lah... Of course for the sultans, it would be a headache lah cause its easier to be the royal leader for Malays and Muslims... But if you're no longer a Malay... Then how?
Over the years, I have seen Murtads coming out... and some of them used to hate the term Murtad because of the negative connotation attached to it... The fact is, this is an Islamic term used to separate Muslims from the believers to the unbelievers... So when a Malay Muslim knows that someone has Murtad... He or she is entitled to look down on that person and treat them with prejudice because they have betrayed Allah and Islam...

But 8 years ago... I met a woman who taught me to OWN the term Murtad... To turn something negative into something positive... To tell Muslims that they longer own them because of their beliefs and that Murtad is no longer a dirty word much like being Black or Gay...

And its true... Why should we let Muslims dictate how Murtads must be seen through the eyes of others? With the exception of not believing in Allah and Islam... A Murtad is every bit like anyone else... Capable of love, hate, anger, joy, hardwork, lazy, fear, greed, kindness... and many other descriptions that makes them... Human...

Sorry for this long post but I felt it was important to set the basic premise first before we learn more about what its like to be a Murtad... If any of you have anything to add... Please feel free...

And to all murtads our there... know that you are not alone....
